Slobcat is written and illustrated by Paul Geraghty. Although he lives in the UK now, he grew up near Pietermaritzburg in South Africa.
He's written and illustrated numerous picture books and won a range of international awards.
He won the Young Africa Award for his Young Adult novel, Pig.
You can find out more about him from his website http://www.paul-geraghty.com
I would use this picture book to introduce Foundation Phase children to inferred meaning or reading between the lines. It's also a fantastic book to develop visual literacy because the pictures tell the story.
Ideas on using SA children's and YA books in schools
I'd like to see schools introducing more South African books to children and young adults. This blog gives ideas on how to do this. They're my ideas but I'd love to get feedback on them. I add ideas as I think of them in no particular order and with no attempt to be comprehensive ... as yet! If you've found a book that you'd like to add, please let me know.
